Over the last fifteen years, Australian artist Patricia Piccinini (b. 1965) has attracted attention across the world with her hyperrealistic sculptures and installations. Her strange and wondrous universe is full of realistic fabulous beasts, mutated human beings and machines come to life. Piccinini’s art responds directly to topical issues such as identity, climate change and new science and technology. Her works explore biological and existential borderlands where human beings and other species meet, merge and transform. Piccinini’s art is inspired by science fiction, mythical folk tales and surrealism. Her imaginative, thought-provoking narratives invite us to reimagine the world. What kind of future are we headed for in a world that may not – or should not – be seen as ‘ours’ any longer?
ARKEN presents the first major exhibition of Patricia Piccinini’s works ever to be staged in the Nordic countries. This richly illustrated book introduces Piccinini’s artistic endeavours through essays and an interview with the artist.
